Field of Dreams

I never knew my Grandpa "Bud". He was electrocuted in an industrial accident when he was in his early 20's. But I like to believe that he is the one from whom I inherited my love for the game of baseball. Perhaps someday we will spend some time together talking about the game we both admire so much. For now though, with the help of a little Photoshop magic, I'll just have to settle for a picture of me and Grandpa Bud together wearing the uniforms of our favorite game.

Sad news about the passing of Monkees star Davy Jones. He was at our Wedding Reception at the Georgia Dome in 1996.  Nice guy.  Refused to give me any wedding advice.  Probably a good thing.  Nice blog from AJC's Rodney Ho remembering Davy Jones.

Spiff wins Wife lotto!!!

I do NOT need to play the lottery! I have Janet as a wife. I am the BIG winner!! Tonight's fare: Chicken with Rosemary, pancetta, red peppers and other secret ingredients ... plus, pole beans ... orzo pasta ... and sesame knots. I think I smell something cooking for dessert too!

Whitney Houston has been gone for almost two weeks now.  I am sad she passed in such a tragic way.  She was an incredible talent.  However, the media coverage of her death and life has been non-stop.  Our society’s fascination with “celebrity” is simply amazing.  (I should know.  I was once part of that media.)  Today I made a stop to remember some people who did not get even close to the media coverage when they passed away.  No special “look back” at their lives … no two-hour live coverage of their funeral … no individual tributes during award shows.  Perhaps these people did not want any special recognition.  Perhaps they were just proud to do a job that allows us to spend our time idolizing celebrities.  Perhaps I will stop by and see these amazing people more often.   (Marietta National Cemetery)

This "toy" was carved and painted by my Great Grandpa in 1942. I call it "Angry Marbles". You can shake it all you want and those three marbles will just roll back and forth ... never escaping. You can see the marbles from all four sides. How he got them in there? No idea.

Looking for Loving Homes

As many of you already know, my wife’s sister Susie passed away on Thanksgiving.  We miss her so much.  Also missing Susie is the animal world.  Susie LOVED all animals and they loved her.  We are attempting to find a nice home, or homes for three of her loving kitties.  Fred, Lottie and Minnie.   Susie’s husband Brad travels quite a bit and will be unable to give them the love and care they need.  Here is a quick description of the kitties from Brad as well as photos.  Please contact me at spiffhappens@gmail.com if you are interested in adopting one or more of these loving cats.  I will then put you in contact with Brad.  Thanks so much.

Lottie

An older cat - very loving and calm - great for most households. She is spayed and had all of her shots. Warm and loving cat.

Fred

Fred is a lovable, gorgeous black and white 18 months old kitten.  His foster mom calls him "lover boy" cause he loves to be loved and kissed.   He was born under his foster mom's deck and has been neutered, had 2 of his 3 shots and has been de-wormed.  His Mom is a feral cat that has since been spayed and tested negative.  He loves to get his nose kissed and purrs up a storm.  He uses his litter box and is beginning to use a scratching post.  

Minnie

Minnie is a petite, sweet, beautiful black and while 18 month old kitten - with a pretty marking on her throat ! She was born under her foster Mom's deck and has been spayed, had 2 of her 3 shots and has been de-wormed. She was the first to use the litter box and the scratching post.   Her Mom tested negative.  She loves to play with her big brother Fred -  they are just gorgeous together and will keep you entertained.  Would love a caring person to adopt them both but would consider separating them for the right loving home.

If Spiff was King for a Day

OK, if I was the “Dude (or Dudette) that be in charge” of this great country of ours … here is what I would do.  On January 1^st I would check the national unemployment rate.  (Currently hovering around 9%).  I would then have a random drawing in the House and Senate and FIRE 9% of those folks.  Paychecks, insurance, all benefits … GONE!  Obviously those folks would qualify for Cobra Insurance if needed.  They would NEVER be allowed to return to their jobs again.  Retrain for a new career.  Isn’t that what we are told to do?  As far as the President goes.  9% of his or her campaign stash would be donated to the government to reduce the national debt.  Just think … every January we would be downsizing government and decreasing our national debt.  Just thinking.

A proposed constitutional amendment that would require Congress to balance the budget failed in the House today. Of course, both sides immediately started blaming each other. I just wonder ... "If politicians pointing fingers at each could somehow produce energy ... would we ever need a drop of oil from the Mideast again?"

Former Atlanta Brave and now Houston Astros’ outfielder Jordan Schafer has been arrested in Florida and charged with felony possession of marijuana. A police report says that black Land Rover driven by Schafer with its windows open pulled up next to a police car. Officers noticed a strong marijuana smell and saw Schafer smoking some wacky- tobaccy. Schafer admitted smoking marijuana and that he had more in the vehicle. A search turned up less than an ounce in a plastic container and a small amount inside “three small marijuana peanut butter cups”. WOW! I know whose house I will be “trick or treating” at this Halloween! Schafer was suspended for the first 50 games back in 2008 for a violation of baseball’s drug policy. There have been signs along the way that Schafer was having problems. If only his former Braves teammates could have noticed these tell-tale signs during their conversations with Jordan.

--Teammate: “Look, the bases are loaded.” --Schafer: “So am I.”

--Teammate: “I love the smell of freshly cut grass at Turner Field.” --Schafer: “And in my apartment.”

--Teammate: “We’re going into the bottom of the third.” --Schafer: “I’m already at the bottom of my fifth.”

--Teammate: “What song did you pick to be played as you walk up to the plate?” --Schafer: “Don’t Bogart that Joint, My Friend.”

Dufus of the Day

(Snellville, Georgia) 21-year-old Stephen Daniel walked into a gas station and told the manager behind the counter to give him all the money in the register. The manager started putting the money in a bag . . . and also started LAUGHING. Why? Because Stephen clearly hadn't bothered to take a look around before the robbery . . . or he would've realized there was a Police Officer in line right behind him. After the manager handed Stephen the money, the officer . . . Lieutenant B.W. Brown from the Snellville police . . . grabbed him by the shoulder and placed him under arrest. You can bet that Stephen will be looking over his shoulder when in the slammer. If you know what I mean.

A Tuesday Top Five

Randy & Spiff were “let go” yesterday from that radio station where they were drawing a paycheck. After years and years of getting up early to “Wake Up” the nice folks in Georgia, their routines have changed a bit. With that in mind, here are the TOP FIVE things Spiff Carner did this morning:

5—Set alarm clock for 3:30, wake up, toss clock in toilet, flush, go back to sleep.

4—Breakfast. Which beer do I try this morning?

3—Begin composing new country song, “Jobs may come and jobs may go but you’ll always be my baby.”

2—Call former radio station and attempt to win those much coveted fair tickets.

1—Look in mirror, notice unsightly nose hairs and say “Screw it!”

Breaking News!

Not to be confused with Breaking Wind! This just in! Randy & Spiff have been "let go" from Atlanta's Greatest Hits. This morning was our last radio show on 106.7. Thanks to all of our incredible, loyal listeners and friends who made going to work each morning so much fun. Without you we would not have survived in Atlanta for so many years. You are the very best! Who knows, we may even surface again on a radio near you. In the meantime, you can keep track of us here at www.spiffhappens.com or www.randyandspiff.blogspot.com. Company was sold. Strictly a business decision on the new owners part. Randy and I will be both FINE and DANDY. Too many blessings all around us to worry about a little speed bump like losing a job.
