10.06.2021: Between rain showers, I ventured out to our back yard to add some bird seed to our feeder. I got an eerie feeling that I was being watched. Oh well, must of been my imagination.

10.03.2021: When I was around 8 or 9 years old, I remember visiting my grandparents in Missouri and wondering why they spent so much time sitting out under a big tree in their yard, talking or reading or just staring off in the distance. Didn’t they know there was a lot of exploring to do on their 30 acres of woods? Years later, after a stint in the Air Force, I arrived home only to find my parents sitting in lawn chairs in front of the opened garage door. They were just talking and killing the time. Didn’t they know there was a festival downtown or a big football game at the high school? Then a few years ago, I realized that just sitting on your porch, or under a tree, or out in front of your garage while doing nothing … was quite enjoyable. It’s great to sit outside, relish the breeze and recall exploring my grandparents’ woods, going to festivals or high school football games and even closing my eyes and hearing my parents and grandparents talking and laughing about their days of youth. And often, I take a magazine with me, so that the neighbors walking by think that I’m actually being productive.

10.02.2021: I recently relocated the skull that appeared on our neighborhood's hiking trail. I put it on a tree in hopes it will keep door-to-door sales people from pestering us. Worse case ... it's a nice Halloween decoration.

10.01.2021: Due to a lack of qualified candidates, the city of Kennesaw was forced to hire an untrained Scarecrow to direct traffic at their busiest intersection. Mr. Scarecrow agreed to work a 12-hour shift for just $3.00. He could have gotten much, much more … if he only had a brain.

9.29.2021: The Top Five Signs fall has arrived at and around Stately Spiff Manor:
5 -- It's almost dark when I get up from my nap.
4 -- The Atlanta Braves are nearing post-season play.
3 -- The Atlanta Falcons already have more losses than wins.
2 -- The Hummingbirds have packed up and headed south.
1 -- The Buzzards are returning to our neighborhood.

9.27.2021: So, I tried a different trail today and did not see one single deer. However, I lucked out and was able to get photos of several other wild animals. I highly recommend Zoo Atlanta for a fun day. Especially if you have a couple of your grandkids along.

9.25.2021: Picked up my American Flag today that proudly flew on September 11th at #kennesawmountainnbp. It will now proudly fly at Stately Spiff Manor. Never forget.

9.24.2021: Since I don't own a telescope or really long camera lens that will allow me to take a decent photo of a distant planet, I decided to try something different. Here's my photo of the "Agaricus Bisporus" comet.

9.22.2021: I'm guessing that I'm not the only one who can't wait to see the beautiful fall colors. (This photo was taken in November, 2018 at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park)

9.21.2021: Finally quit raining long enough for me to sneak in a short hike at #kennesawmountainnbp. This young buck also decided to get out and enjoy the day.

9.20.2021: What do you do on a rainy day? Me? I just sit on the front porch and wait for the Turkey Parade to pass by our home.

9.19.2021: That time a few years ago when I was in South Africa and needed to rent a car. I asked for an Impala. Lesson learned.

9.18.2021: Took this photo on the nature trail in our subdivision. The skull was first discovered by Brad, one of our neighbors. Oddly enough, a couple weeks prior to the “discovery,” Brad had a cookout at his home where he proudly served his special venison burgers. Coincidence? You tell me. At this moment, Brad is a “person of interest” in what may or may not be a criminal offense.

9.16.2021: Stopped by "Field of Flags" at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park today. A misty rain was falling and low clouds engulfed the mountain top. Very few people were there. It was a very peaceful feeling. Thanks again to the Kiwanis Club of Marietta for making this possible.

9.14.2021: Many people believe when a cardinal lands in your yard, an angel is near. Cardinals can remind you of a departed loved one and are known as the most notable spiritual messenger. To others the sighting of a cardinal can be a sign of good luck and loyalty. Native American lore states if a cardinal is seen, it is believed that individual will have good luck within 12 days of the sighting. To Braves fans, Cardinals often bring despair and reminds them of how the "infield fly rule" can be a nightmare.

9.7.2021: Meet Atlanta Firefighter Chris Peringer. Each September Chris wears well over 50 pounds of bunker gear and climbs Kennesaw Mountain twice in succession to honor the firefighters who entered and climbed the stairs in the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001. It was our honor to meet him today. If you get a chance, visit the Field of Flags at Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park. I’ll post more Field of Flag photos later.

08.29.2021: Okay, so I stumbled upon this "kill" today while hiking #kennesawmountainnbp. Something buzzed by my head and I saw it pounce on a very unlucky yellow jacket on the side of a tree. The "creature" then carried the yellow jacket to a small branch of a nearby tree where it appeared to enjoy lunch. Two questions. Does anyone know what type of "creature" this is? And, does this foreshadow bad luck for the Georgia Tech football team?

241/365

UPDATE: Thanks to Jason Lesley and John Cown, the creature has been identified as a Robber Fly or Promachus.

234/365

08.22.2021: Sometimes when hiking through the woods, I’ll pick up a colorful leaf and use it to mark my path. I do this for two reasons. One: I’m old and do not want to get lost. Two: I’m hoping someone young will see it, take a photo of it, and share it on social media saying something like … “You won’t believe what I saw while hiking. A leaf fell from a tree and landed standing up on top of a broken tree stump. What are the odds?”
